Critical knowledge gaps and research priorities in global soil salinity

چکیده

Approximately 1 billion ha of the global land surface is currently salt-affected, representing about 7% earth's surface. Whereas most it results from natural geochemical processes, an estimated 30% irrigated lands globally are salt-affected through secondary human-induced salinization. Application lower quality, alternative irrigation water further threatening expansion areal extent soil salinity, in addition to climate change causing increases salt-water intrusion coastal areas and increasing crop requirements. The reduced availability freshwater resources for irrigation, continued reduction world's cultivated agricultural area by degradation urbanization, conjunction with a growing world population complicates problem seeking sustainable solutions. This scoping review prioritizes critical knowledge gaps makes recommendations 10 priorities salinity research toward productive system food-secure future world. We also include basin-specific case studies that illustrate progress major addressing impacts By identifying priorities, we seek accelerate enhanced funding bring new innovative solutions mitigation impacts. want inspire science community develop directions research.

The challenge of West Nile virus in Europe: knowledge gaps and research priorities.

West Nile virus (WNV) is continuously spreading across Europe, and other continents, i.e. North and South America and many other regions of the world. Despite the overall sporadic nature of outbreaks with cases of West Nile neuroinvasive disease (WNND) in Europe, the spillover events have increased and the virus has been introduced into new areas. The high genetic diversity of the virus, with r...

Food insecurity and HIV/AIDS: current knowledge, gaps, and research priorities.

Food insecurity and HIV/AIDS are intertwined in a vicious cycle that heightens vulnerability to, and worsens the severity of, each condition. We review current knowledge and research priorities regarding the impact of food insecurity on HIV transmission risk and clinical outcomes. Observational studies suggest that food insecurity is associated with increased HIV transmission risk behaviors and...
